We were invited to serve up our sodas at a live performance with Lyle Lovett last month. Lyle entertained a small crowd at the KGSR studio during a live on air broadcast, and kept us laughing in betweeen songs. His style of telling a story in a song is truly amazing. We were able to get a minute to meet and speak with him, and share our story about life on the road with ROOT BEER! What a great time!

We are the first soda to be Fair Trade Certified by Transfair USA. We use sugar from a small co-op called The Asociacion Agricola Canera del Sur in Paraguay. It is located near the small city of Iturbe, 5 hours by bus away from Asuncion, Paraguay's capital. This remote, undeveloped area consists of grassy plains with some wooded hills. The cooperative was founded by small-scale farmers in the region to negotiate better prices for their raw sugar cane from the processing mill. Conventionally in Paraguay, individual sugar cane farmers have low bargaining power, no access to price and market information and low prices that fail to provide sustainable livelihoods for them and their families. By choosing Fair Trade, Maine Root has empowered this cooperative of farmers to receive better prices, as well as social premiums for investment in community projects. In addition to sugar cane, the farmers of Canera del Sur also grow cotton and soybeans and tend livestock.
